John Burgoyne



Burgoyne, John (1722–92), British general in the American Revolutionary War. He fought in the Seven Years War (1756–63), and became a playwright, socialite, and member of Parliament. Posted to America, he attempted to put into effect his plan to split off the New England colonies, but was forced to surrender by Gen. Horatio Gates at Saratoga (1777).
