Lord Burghley



Burghley, Lord (1520–98), English statesman. He was chief advisor to Queen Elizabeth I (1558–98) and her spokesman in Parliament. A supporter of the Anglican Church, he repressed Catholic revolts and advocated the execution of Elizabeth's Catholic sister, Mary Queen of Scots.
