Buffalo



Buffalo (pop. 323,400), second largest city in the state of New York, situated at the eastern end of Lake Erie near Niagara Falls, in western New York. Buffalo was incorporated in 1832. Buffalo is at a natural junction point for lake, rail, and road transportation and is a hub of rail transport. The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 was a turning point in the city's development. Buffalo is one of the United States' major centers of grain distribution and a leading flour-milling center and steel producer. Among the important institutions located in Buffalo are the Albright-Knox Gallery and one of the campuses of the State University of New York.
