James Bowdoin



Bowdoin, James (1726–90), U.S. revolutionary leader. Bowdoin served in the Massachusetts legislature (1753–76) and supported the patriots' cause. A conservative, as governor of Massachusetts (1785–87), he suppressed Shays' Rebellion. He was first president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
