Sir Mackenzie Bowell

Bowell, Sir Mackenzie (1823–1917), Canadian prime minister (1894–96). Elected to the House of Commons from Ontario in 1867, he held 3 cabinet-level positions under 3 successive prime ministers. On December 21, 1894, he was chosen prime minister following the death of Sir John Thompson, but his refusal to act decisively in several provincial disputes cost him the support of Parliament and his cabinet. He resigned on April 27, 1896 and remained in the Senate until 1906.
