Nathaniel Bowditch



Bowditch, Nathaniel (1773–1838), self-taught U.S. mathematician and astronomer remembered for his New American Practical Navigator (1802), “the seaman's bible,” later made standard in the U.S. navy. He also translated and annotated Laplace's Celestial Mechanics (1829–38).
