Kuching

Kuching (pop. 150,000), capital of Sarawak, a Malaysian state on the island of Borneo. Archeologists confirm it to have been an ancient trading center. The modern city was founded by the British in 1841. Located on the Sarawak River 18 mi (29 km) inland from the South China Sea, it is a major livestock trading and fishing center. It exports rubber, pepper, and timber. Kuching is home to a modern airport and the Sarawak Museum, which is set in scenic gardens and exhibits collections representing the history and archeology of Borneo.
