Stanley Kubrick



Kubrick, Stanley (1928– ), U.S. film director and writer noted for the strong social commentary of his work. His most famous films include the controversial Dr. Strangelove (1964), which treated the accidental triggering of nuclear war as a bitter joke; 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), his own story of humanity's distant past and future, which won an Academy Award for special effects; and A Clockwork Orange (1971), a terrifying look at criminal rehabilitation. Paths of Glory (1958) was Kubrick's first feature-length film, and Lolita (1962) his treatment of Vladimir Nabokov's novel of obsession. More recent movies include The Shining (1980) and Full Metal Jacket (1987).
