Sarawak



Sarawak, state of Malaysia on the northwestern coast of Borneo. It has a tropical climate, and much of its area, 48,050 sq mi (131,582 sq km), is covered by a primary rain forest. Sarawak became self-governing and joined Malaysia in 1963 after having been occupied by the Japanese during World War II. For 100 years prior to this, Sarawak was governed by an Englishman, James Brooke, and his heirs. The people of Sarawak are Dyaks, Malays, Melanaus, and Murits. Its products include sago palm, timber, rubber, pepper, coconuts, and camphor.
