William Dampier



Dampier, William (1652–1715), English explorer. After sailing the Atlantic and Pacific as a buccaneer, he was commissioned by the British Admiralty to explore the southwest Pacific. The first Englishman to reach Australia, he wrote A New Voyage Round the World (1697) and other books.
