Damp



Damp, in mining, name given to various dangerous gases. Firedamp is methane, a colorless compound of hydrogen and carbon that forms a highly explosive mixture with air. Afterdamp (mainly carbon dioxide and nitrogen), and chokedamp and blackdamp (mainly carbon dioxide) are other noxious mine gases.
