D

D, fourth letter of the English alphabet. It is derived from the Phoenician daleth and Greek delta. It occupied the same position in those alphabets. Thought to originate from a pictorial representation of a door, it may have some connection with the Egyptian hieroglyph for door. In Roman numerals, D represents the number 500.
