Commando

Commando, military unit trained for swift, guerrilla-like raids into enemy territory. The British army adopted the word and the practice after the Boer War (1899–1902), and battalion-strength units were organized during World War II. The U.S. army Special Forces and Ranger units are modeled after the British commandos.
