Commedia dell'arte



Commedia dell'arte, form of Italian comedy that flourished in the 16th–18th centuries. Traveling professional actors (often wearing masks) improvised action and dialogue around outline plots with stock characters. The commedia had a lasting influence on the theater throughout Europe.
