Whittaker Chambers



Chambers, Whittaker (1901–61), U.S. journalist and main witness in perjury trial of State Department official Alger Hiss. Chambers joined the Communist Party in 1924, became a Soviet agent during the 1930s, and in August 1948, testified that Alger Hiss passed him U.S. military secrets. Chambers' autobiography, Witness, was published in 1952.
