Carnegie Foundations

Carnegie Foundations, philanthropic organizations established by Andrew Carnegie to advance education, research, and world peace. The Carnegie Institution of Washington, D.C., supports research in physical and biological sciences. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching works to improve higher education, and the Carnegie Corporation of New York endows projects in preschool education and education for the disadvantaged. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace promotes peace through studies of international law and diplomacy. These and other organizations set a pattern for other major institutions, such as the Ford and Rockefeller foundations.
