Andrew Carnegie

Carnegie, Andrew (1835–1919), U.S. steel magnate and philanthropist. A Scottish emigrant, Carnegie rose from bobbin-boy in a cotton factory to railroad manager and then steel producer at a time of great demand. He believed that the duty of the rich is to distribute their surplus wealth, and in 1900 he began to set up a vast number of charitable foundations and educational institutions.
