Robert Campin

Campin, Robert (1375?–1444), Flemish painter best known for his religious works. His art reflects the influence of manuscript illumination, though with a keener sense of plasticity in rendering the forms. One of his major works is the triptych of the Annunciation (c.1428) known as the Mérode Altarpiece. Depicting in realistic detail the daily life of the rising bourgeoisie, Campin became a founder of the Netherlandish School, influencing Jan Van Eyck and Rogier Van Der Weyden, among others.
