Cabal

Cabal, secret group or organization engaged in intrigues; also applied to the intrigues themselves. The term was already used in the 17th century for a secret council of the king. The conduct of English king Charles II's ministers Clifford, Arlington, Buckingham, Ashley, and Lauderdale (whose initials spelled “cabal”) gave the word a sinister sense.
