William Cullen Bryant



Bryant, William Cullen (1794–1878), U.S. poet and journalist. Editor of the New York Evening Post (1826) and later part owner (1829–78), he campaigned against slavery and for free speech. He wrote the pastoral odes “Thanatopsis” (1817) and translated the Iliad (1870) and the Odyssey (1872).
