Sir David Bruce



Bruce, Sir David (1855–1931), British physician and bacteriologist, specialist in tropical diseases. Born in Melbourne, Australia, he studied in Edinburgh and Berlin. In Malta he discovered the bacillus causing brucellosis (1886) and its transmission in goat's milk; in Africa he discovered the organism causing sleeping sickness and its transmission by the tsetse fly (1903–10). An expert on trench fever and tetanus, he also studied the connection between human and animal diseases.
