Britten, Benjamin (1913–76), British composer. His works include the operas Peter Grimes (1945), Billy Budd (1951), The Turn of the Screw (1954), and Death in Venice (1973), as well as such instrumental and choral works as the Variations on a Theme by Frank Bridge (1937) and War Requiem (1962).
