Brittany

Brittany (French: Bretagne), historic penninsular region of northwestern France. The Romans conquered the area in 56 B.C. and named it Armonica. It was settled about 500 A.D. by Celtic Britons fleeing the Anglo-Saxon invasion. After struggles for independence from the Franks and from Normandy, Anjou, England, and France in turn, it became a French province in 1532. The Bretons retain their own cultural traditions and language.
