Harry Bridges



Bridges, Harry (Alfred Bryant Renton Bridges; 1901–90), U.S. labor leader, Australian- born. He helped form the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU) in 1937, and as its president (until 1977) fought to improve dockworking conditions. Until 1955 there were many government attempts to deport him as a communist.
