Thomas Hart Benton



Benton, Thomas Hart (1782–1858), U.S. statesman; great uncle of the painter Thomas Hart Benton. He represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate for 30 years (1821–51), championing the development of the West and opposing the extension of slavery. He also opposed the Mexican War. After leaving the Senate, he served one term (1853–55) in the House of Representatives.
