Lisbon

Lisbon (pop. 827,800), capital and largest city of Portugal, on the Tagus River estuary near the Atlantic Ocean. Its harbor handles the bulk of the country's foreign trade. A Roman settlement from c.200 B.C., Lisbon was conquered by the Moors in 716. It was reconquered in 1147 and became the capital c.1260. In the 16th century it was the center of Portugal's colonial empire. Much of the city was rebuilt after a disastrous earthquake in 1755. Current industries include steel, petroleum refining, textiles, chemicals, paper, and metal products.
