Sir Joseph Lister

Lister, Sir Joseph (1827–1912), English surgeon who pioneered antiseptic surgery. Pasteur had shown that microscopic organisms (bacteria) are responsible for infection, but his sterilization techniques were unsuitable for surgical use. Through experimentation Lister succeeded in using carbolic acid as a sterilization agent. This greatly reduced post-operative fatalities caused by infection.
