Knossos



Knossos, ancient city on the north coast of Crete, the center of Minoan civilization. Excavations by Sir Arthur Evans revealed settlements dating from before 3000 B.C.. The great palace of Knossos comprises more than 5 acres (2 hectares) of halls, ceremonial rooms, and staircases, with magnificent fresco decorations, advanced sanitation, and every luxury. Fire destroyed it c.1400 B.C.
