Kanpur



Kanpur (pop. 1,879,400), city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, north central India, on the Ganges River. An industrial center manufacturing silk, cotton, wool, and leather goods, Kanpur first became an economic power in 1801, when it was ceded to the British East India Company. During the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857 the entire British garrison of the city was wiped out.
