Robert Maynard Hutchins



Hutchins, Robert Maynard (1899–1977), U.S. educator, president (1929–45) and chancellor (1945–51) of the University of Chicago. He advocated the integration and synthesis of academic disciplines. In 1959 he founded the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions as an ideal “Community of Scholars.” His books include The Higher Learning in America (1936) and University of Utopia (1953).
