Anne Marbury Hutchinson

Hutchinson, Anne Marbury (1591–1643), English Puritan religious leader, one of the founders of Rhode Island. She emigrated to Massachusetts in 1634, where she preached that faith alone could achieve salvation. She opposed obedience to the strict laws of the Puritan community. In 1638 she and her followers were banished, and they established a settlement on Aquidneck Island (now Rhode Island). She later moved to New York, where she was killed by Native Americans.
