John Hope



Hope, John (1868–1936), U.S. educator and civil rights leader. Son of a black mother and white father, he advocated advanced education at a time when Booker T. Washington was inclined to restrict black education to the purely technological. The first African American president of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga., in 1906, he became first president of Atlanta University in 1929.
