Hirohito

Hirohito (1901–89), emperor of Japan from 1926 until his death. After World War II the recognition of the emperor as a god was rescinded, and Hirohito became a “symbol of the state and unity of the people,” without political or sovereign power. He was instrumental in persuading the government to accept unconditional surrender in World War II.
