Ando Hiroshige



Hiroshige, Ando (1797–1858), Japanese painter and printmaker of the ukiyo-e (popular) school led by Hokusai. He is famous for his sets of woodblock color prints depicting atmospheric landscapes of snow, rain, mist, and moonlight. These inspired a number of his contemporaries in the West, including Edouard Manet and James Whistler. Among his works is 53 Stages of the Tokaido Highway (1833), a series of landscapes.
