Herring



Herring, narrow-bodied blue and silver fish of the family Clupidae, common in the North Atlantic and the Pacific. Herring schools often contain millions of fish and are food for many other animals. They feed on plankton, minute sea organisms. Most of the herring eaten by people is preserved by salting or smoking.
