Grand Alliance



Grand Alliance, or League of Augsburg, name of 3 separate European alliances created to control the invasions of King Louis XIV of France. The first (1673–79) included the Holy Roman Empire, Prussia, and several German states. The second alliance (1689–97), between the Netherlands, England, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire, fought against France in the War of the League of Augsburg. The third alliance (1701–14), made up of some German states, Prussia, Austria, England, and the Netherlands, fought France in the War of the Spanish Succession.
