Grand Army of the Republic

Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), society of Union Civil War veterans. Founded in 1866, it assisted veterans and their families by founding veterans' homes and by lobbying for government pensions. Over 400,000 veterans were members in 1890; the order was discontinued in 1956.
