Granada, Kingdom of, medieval Arab Islamic kingdom in southern Spain. Founded 1238 by the Nasrid dynasty, with its capital in Granada, the kingdom was the center of Moorish culture, a leading world center of art, science, and literature, with an extremely tolerant policy toward non-Muslims. In the 15th century internal dissensions furthered the kingdom's ultimate conquest by the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, who took over in 1492 and drove the Muslims and Jews out of Spain.
