John Gay



Gay, John (1685–1732), English poet and dramatist, author of The Beggar's Opera (1728). Using English ballads, he satirized Italian operatic forms and contemporary politics in this comedy of highwaymen, thieves, and prostitutes, on which Brecht based his Threepenny Opera.
