Rajiv Gandhi



Gandhi, Rajiv (1944–91), prime minister of India (1984–87). He studied engineering at Cambridge University and returned to India to work as a commercial pilot. Elected to Parliament in 1981, he was appointed secretary of the Congress Party by his mother, Indira Gandhi, in 1983, and became prime minister after she was assassinated. During the election campaign of 1991 he was assassinated.
