Epilepsy



Epilepsy, brain disorder characterized by susceptibility to seizures and convulsions that can cause loss of consciousness and muscle control. The causes of epilepsy are not well understood. Among children it may be a result of brain injuries during birth or of abnormalities in fetal development. In adults it can be caused by head injuries and tumors. It is normally treated with drugs that prevent or inhibit seizures.
