Empiricism

Empiricism, philosophical theory that regards experience, mental or physical, as the only source of knowledge. With its emphasis on experimentation and its opposition to the concept of innate ideas, empiricism arose parallel to the development of experimental science during the 17th and 18th centuries, especially in England. Its major originators were John Locke (1632–1704) and David Hume (1711–76).
