Elbe River



Elbe River, major river in central Europe. It rises in the northwestern part of the Czech Republic and flows 725 mi (1,167 km) north through Germany into the North Sea beyond Hamburg. The river is navigable for some 525 mi (845 km) and is connected by a canal system to the Oder River. Important cities on the Elbe include Hamburg, Dresden, and Magdeburg.
