Jan De Witt



De Witt, Jan (1625–72), Dutch statesman. He was grand pensionary (ruler) of Holland (1653–72) and republican opponent of the House of Orange. In 1667 he made peace with England, and in 1668 he negotiated the Triple Alliance with England and Sweden against Louis XIV of France to end the War of Devolution.
