War of Devolution



Devolution, War of (1667–68), conflict between Spain and France over the right of succession to the Spanish Netherlands. Louis XIV of France claimed that by an old law the territory should have reverted to France. Although his military campaign was successful, he was forced to withdraw in the face of the Triple Alliance of England, the United Provinces, and Sweden.
