Hugo De Vries

De Vries, Hugo (1848–1935), Dutch botanist who developed the theory of mutation, suggesting that new plant and animal species are the result of sudden transformations that occur spontaneously and are continued for generations. His findings stimulated advances in the study of heredity, and he was one of the first to introduce the experimental method in the investigation of the mechanisms of evolution.
