Willem De Kooning



De Kooning, Willem (1904– ), Dutch-born U.S. painter, among the founders of abstract expressionism. Influenced by Arshile Gorky, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso, he painted abstract, highly colored pictures with thickly applied pigment. His series entitled Woman— including, for instance, Woman I (1952)—contains some of his most famous works.
