Ferenc Deák



Deák, Ferenc (1803–76), Hungarian statesman who negotiated the 1867 Compromise that gave Hungary internal autonomy within Austria-Hungary. He entered the Diet in 1833. In the 1848 revolution he became minister of justice but resigned in disagreement with the revolutionary Lajos Kossuth the same year. He returned to the Diet in 1861, becoming the country's acknowledged leader.
