Water hyacinth

Water hyacinth, South American floating plant (Eichhornia crassipes). The plants, which have attractive purple or yellow flowers growing on erect stems, float on air-filled bladders, trailing their roots in the water, or in mud where the water is very shallow. Water hyacinths grow wild in South America but have been introduced into other tropical areas. They frequently clog waterways, as in the southern United States.
