Washington Monument



Washington Monument, stone obelisk in Washington, D.C, honoring George Washington. Begun in 1848, it was completed in 1884 and opened to the public in 1888. Faced with white marble, it is 555.5 ft (169.3 m) high. Visitors may go to the top by elevator or by climbing 898 steps.
